A mill is a device that breaks solid materials into smaller pieces by grinding, crushing, or cutting. Such comminution is an important unit operation in many processes.There are many different types of mills and many types of materials processed in them. Historically mills were powered by hand or by animals (e.g., via a hand crank), working animal (e.g., horse mill), wind or water ().

A ball mill, a type of grinder, is a cylindrical device used in grinding (or mixing) materials like ores, chemicals, ceramic raw materials and paints.Ball mills rotate around a horizontal axis, partially filled with the material to be ground plus the grinding medium. Different materials are used as media, including ceramic balls, flint pebbles, and stainless steel balls.

This is due two reasons, fine gold that fails to settle upon and make contact with the plates, and a type of gold occurrence in which gold particles are brown lusterless.

Less dense, higher volume material (as in sulfides in gold ore) forms a band at the base of the ramp, reporting to the middlings tray. The lightest material stays behind and reports to the tailings tray. Other design features of the table were added to minimize turbulence, hence higher fine gold recovery to <325 mesh.

The KS Mine comprised a large open pit mine feeding gold-copper ore to a 52,000 tonnes per day (t/d) processing plant. Between 1998 and 2011, KS produced approximately 3.0 million ounces of gold and 750 million pounds of copper from 218 Mt of ore. Open pit mining and processing ceased in March 2011 on depletion of the mineral reserves.

Typically these zones have a silicified core with fine sprays of disseminated arsenopyrite hosting the best grades. Disseminated sulphide replacement ore bodies range up to 50m in width with a strike between 60m and 90m. Free-milling gold constitutes up to 50% of the total metal content with the remainder occluded within the arsenopyrite.

Since 1999 all ore has been sourced from open pit mining operations and is currently processed at the 9.8 Mtpa North Heap Leach facility and the 12.3 Mtpa CIL plant. A third facility, the South Heap Leach facility was closed in December 2008. The ore is a free milling conglomerate with negligible sulphide content.
